Each year, the YRA Executive
Committee reviews and evaluates nominees for its four annual discretionary
awards. These awards are presented at the Annual Meeting, usually held at the
Larchmont Yacht Club in December. Nominations are welcomed from individuals and
clubs.
The Ned Anderson Achievement
Award is the YRA’s highest honor, recognizing outstanding service by an
individual to yacht racing on Long Island Sound. The award was established in
1961 and was first awarded to Briggs Cunningham. Nominees must be amateur
sailors who sail on Long Island Sound, and they should be members of the YRA.
The Arthur P. Davis - Beach
Point Yacht Club Trophy is the YRA's oldest award. It was established in
1955 to recognize yachting achievement on Long Island Sound. It has been used
to recognize both an outstanding single achievement in running an event or
championship, or to recognize the long-term contributions of a particular member
club or organization. The first winner was the American Yacht Club. Nominees
must be YRALIS member clubs.
The David Pryor Sportsmanship
Trophy was established in 1991 to recognize either a single act of exemplary
conduct in a regatta, or to honor an individual’s selfless dedication to
sportsmanship and fair sailing. The first recipient was Dick Ronan. Nominees
must be amateur sailors who sail on Long Island Sound, and they should be
members of the YRA. If nominated for a specific act of sportsmanship, the act
must have been performed either on Long Island Sound or while competing in an
event sponsored by a YRALIS member club.
The Roger H. Shope Trophy
is the YRA's newest award, and was established in 1998 to honor outstanding
achievement in race management. Named in honor of the YRA’s 34th
President, the award was first presented to Laurence Ehrhardt. Nominees must be
