Bernard Armstrong, Riverside YC, Elected President of the YRA of LIS

The Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound (YRA of LIS) held their Annual Meeting on Sunday, Dec. 6 at Larchmont YC. After a reprise of the year in photos by Allen and Daniella Clark, Photoboat.com, President Robert Kendrick called for the election of officers and members of the Executive Committee. Elected were: Bernard Armstrong, Riverside YC, President; Kevin Daily, New York YC and Mark Parry, New York YC, Vice-Presidents; Leigh Sterflinger, Lloyd Harbor YC, Treasurer; Brenda Lewis, YRALIS, Secretary. Elected to the Executive Committee, Class of 2010: Jeffrey Ohstrom, City Island YC and Quentin Thomas, Douglaston Yacht Squadron; Class of 2011: Jamie Ewing, Cedar Point YC and Peter Gould, Stamford YC; and Class of 2012: George Petrides, American YC and Dana Schnipper, Sea Cliff YC.

The YRA confers four discretionary awards to honor individuals and clubs that have made an impact on the sailing community during the past year. John Mendez, Larchmont YC and New York YC, won the Ned Anderson Achievement Award, the YRA's highest honor, recognizing outstanding service by an individual to yacht racing on LIS for serving as Regatta Chair and PRO for many events, most recently New York YC Invitational Cup. John ''Tinker'' Myles, American YC and New York YC, won the Roger H. Shope Trophy for outstanding achievement in race management for his years of service as an active race officer on Long Island Sound. Dr. Robert Michler, Riverside YC and New York YC, won the David Pryor Sportsmanship Trophy for his dedication to sportsmanship as the attending physician for the US National Disabled Championship. Cedar Point Yacht Club won the Arthur P. Davis – Beach Point Yacht Club Trophy, the oldest YRA award, which recognizes yachting achievement on Long Island Sound for running major national and regional events.
