RE: Score Reporting for YRA Trophy Qualifier Regattas
Dear Colleague:
As the Yacht Racing Association of the Long Island Sound
continues our mission to better the sport of sailboat racing in our area and
among our member clubs, it has been suggested that we send a reminder to all
committee chairs regarding season scoring and reporting. Over the past few
years the YRA of LIS has made great progress in filling the role of an
information conduit for the sailing community. We have enhanced our website to
provide updates on season trophy rankings as we progress through the summer, and
have received a great deal of positive feedback.
In order to provide the best service to our area sailors, we
need to display the most timely and accurate results possible. For this, we
require your assistance. In the past the YRA has found it necessary to manually
research and follow-up with individual clubs to attain results after events. It
is our goal to eliminate this manual and time-intensive process with the
cooperation of member club's race committee chairs and regatta PROs. In most
cases, regatta results should be emailed to the YRA Scorekeeper at the same time
they are sent to the member club webmaster for posting to the club website.
Please review the scoring method and reporting requirements
below. You are encouraged to post this letter and appropriate supporting
documents in your Race Room, or otherwise disseminate this information among
your committee. To promote participation, the YRA scorekeeper will be tracking
performance metrics this year, including timely results submitted and number of
non-YRA member vessels racing in YRA qualifying divisions. We will be posting
these metrics on the scoring website (Click
Here),
as well as sharing them with the International Society for the Perpetuation of
Cruelty to Racing Yachtsmen (I.S.P.C.R.Y.).
YRA Season Scoring Method:
Scoring for YRA of LIS season trophies will continue to use
the High Point Percentage of Perfection Scoring System. A Yacht will be
awarded one point for starting, and one point for each YRA of LIS member yacht
that she beats. In a single race, a yacht’s percentage of perfection score is
calculated by dividing the numerator, consisting of points awarded, by the
denominator, consisting of the points earned by the winner of the race.
For a season trophy, a yacht’s percentage of perfection (as
expressed above) in each of her best qualifying races (as determined above)
will be averaged to produce a season percentage of perfection. The highest
season percentage of perfection wins the season trophy. Once a yacht has
qualified (see “Qualifying”), she will receive one throw out race for each
five races she has started.
Member Club Regatta Score Reporting:
Only events that are listed as qualifying events for season
trophies in the YRA or LIS Handicap Racing Yearbook need be reported to the
YRA Scorekeeper. A list of these events can also been seen on the YRA or LIS
website (Click Here).
Only events marked in bold text are considered qualifying events for YRA
season trophies. It should also be noted that it is the responsibility of the
member club to check each participating vessel in a YRA qualifying race for a
valid YRA of LIS PHRF or US Sailing IMS certificate.
Race results are expected to be provided to the YRA
Scorekeeper by the Wednesday following the end of the event. This is to
assume that all pending protests have been heard and the results are
finalized. Please do not submit preliminary results.
The preferred method of score reporting are "Race Detail"
files from Bill Thogerson's YRS program. Details on how to produce these
files are available on the YRS of LIS website (Click
Here).
If a club is unable to provide race details through the YRS
program, it is necessary to report each race's results with the following
information:
Regatta Name
Class/Division Name/Number
Race Name/Number
Date of Race
Vessel Sail Number
Vessel Name
Vessel Rating
Vessel Skipper Name
Vessel Class Finish Position
Please note that Class Finish Position should also include any
DNS, DNF, OCR finishes. A scoring sheet in Excel format has also been
provided on the YRA or LIS website (Click
Here)
to help facilitate non-YRS reporting.
New ideas for improving both the scoring and communication of
current scores to the racers are always under consideration by the Handicap
Racing Committee, and a competitor’s ideas are always welcome. If there are any
questions regarding the form or the guidelines please contact Sloop Petersen by
email at scores@yralis.org or through the YRA office at 516 767-9240.
Sincerely,
Sloop Petersen
