Hahn and Russell Win The Queen’s Cup - Trophy stays at American YC for Fifth Consecutive Year

On July 12th, women and girls took to the waters south of AYC to compete in this year’s Long Island Sound Sailing Championship. The Queen’s Cup, a YRA event sailed in Ideal 18s, is open to all amateur yachtswomen who are at least 18 years of age.

The racers who arrived Saturday morning were greeted with a warm, sunny day and very little breeze.  Nine teams representing seven YRALIS member clubs from around the Sound were ready to vie for The Queen’s Cup.   AYC fielded two teams: defending champion Clemmie Everett with crew Katie Barton and the 2010 winners, Alix Hahn and Carolyn Russell.

PRO Sheila Cameron and her committee had to postpone until the Southeasterly breeze filled in to about 4 knots before setting the course and the first race for the Queen’s Cup was started at 11:11am.  After the first race, wind shifts forced the RC to reset the course and by early afternoon a solid Southwesterly breeze at 8 to 10 knots finally settled in and held. With six races sailed, the competitors earned a much appreciated throw-out race.
